Overview of our Meetings and Events

Das Haus and the Historical Society of North German Settlements in Western New York hold many events during the year. Usually these events are related to the history of the local area and can include many interesting topics. Examples of previous meetings / presentations are:

  • The history of commercial establishments in Martinsville, NY.
  • The collapse of the Schoelkopf Power Plant in Niagara Falls.
  • Several “Plattdeutsch” (low German) luncheons at which this regional dialect is spoken and translated for the non-German speakers that attend.
  • How to cook “Springerle” (delicious, holiday) cookies.
  • Discussions of a particular family tree or memories shared by some of our “seasoned” society members.

The society also sponsors an annual dinner with a special speaker. In the past, we have done such things as providing a meal based on recipes from the 1500’s using the types and combinations of food they ate and served in “removes” rather than courses. Our “special speaker” was Martin Luther (or someone who was acting as him) who told us about life in Germany in medieval times.

The dates and times for our Society meetings and annual dinners are published in all the local newspapers and posted in public places. For information on meetings or events that are coming up please call (716) 795-2890.
